Well, Xoom claims they can provide infinite web space, so I thought
I'd use some more of it!
Years ago, before even the library where my player lives got on the Net,
said library set up something they called a "software vending
machine" - a PC in a box loaded with a stack of CD-ROMs (three to be
precise) from which people were free to copy anything they liked. (all free
of charge, so it didn't really "vend" the stuff... but that's what
they called it) Most of the contents were different PC program which I, not
having a PC, had no use for; but there were also several pictures in GIF and
JPEG format which I took home to look at.
Now, at the threshold of a new millennium, I've decided to put some
of the pics on the web for your perusal, mostly scanned classic art but
also some others I like. The program that copied them in the first place
not only copied files kind of intelligently, it also put together a list
of file descriptions from its database, and it's these descriptions that
appear in plain type below. Unfortunately the people who wrote
the descriptions in the first place apparently didn't know how little
space they had for each description, so most of them are kind of cropped.
Duh. I've tried adding some comments of my own in the default typeface)...
I've put some favourites at the top and the rest in alphabetical order.
Oh, and I also converted most of the GIFs into JPEG format except for
a few that got bigger that way! (I also cleaned up the file names a bit,
they were all in upperacse)

Excellent GIF of a viking woman drawing.
The historical Boadicea was some kind of British chieftess way back when
and probably wore more plain armour. And she wasn't exactly a viking
either... Still, it's a nice drawing, apparently by Chris Achilleos,
whoever that is. (So why does the signature in the corner say RLM?)
Oh, and the excellent GIF makes an excellent JPEG too...

Two eagles in flight.
Flight of fancy, perhaps? I couldn't fly upside down to save my life...
but hey, I'm a skunk, what did you expect? *giggle*
Jokes aside, though, it's a nice picture. Wish I knew who drew it.
At least I have the full title -
Courtship Renewed

Eagle soaring over country landscape
I can hear my friends asking, "Honestly, Skunkie, what is it with you
and all these eagles?" Well, I've got an eagle morph but it's kind of
silly - unlike these pictures.

Some kids watering some flowers. Fuzzy, b
Eep! The first cropped description. Apparently the picture is fuzzy and b,
whatever that means. The kids are cute, anyway.

Tiny Toon adventures in the Acme computer
The toons are not in a computer, so I guess the missing word here is
"lab".
The poster on the wall mentions the newsgroup alt.tv.tiny-toons, so maybe
it came from there? (The drawing I mean)

Painting) Astruc, Zacharie: The Chinese
Okay, the rest of these pics are classic art (with one exception I think)
in alphabetic order...
|
|
Painting) Cole, Thomas: The Voyage of Life
By Thomas Cole (1801-1848)
Remember what I said about the original database having limited space for
descriptions? This and the above are the first of a whole bunch where the
typist wasted nine characters telling us it's a painting!
|
|
Painting) Copley, John: Thomas Aston Cof
...which gets really irritating when you realize that unless Thomas Aston
had more than twelve letters in his last name it would have fit here!
John Singleton Copley (1738-1815)

Painting) Cropsey, Jasper: Castle by a Lake
Nice peaceful place. I'd like to live there, only I live on a balcony in
Storm Tower!
|
|
Painting) Manet, Edouard: the Fifer
...to live in that castle, and have this kid play for me. That would be
something. *grin*
Edouard Manet (1832-1883)

Painting) Guillaumin, Armand: Rainy Weather
It never rains on the MUCKs, and thank goodness for that. The smell of
wet fur would be pretty overwhelming.
|
|
Painting) Legros, Alphonse: La Communion
This looks so peaceful I'll just keep quiet.... Oops!
|
|
Painting) Manet, Edouard: The Railroad G
Ah, another Manet (which, occasionally, is Norwegian for jellyfish!)
The RR in the file name no doubt stands for RailRoad, but what about the G
in the description? Girls? Gate? It's questions like this that keep me awake
at night - not.

Painting) Maureau, Alphonse: Banks of the
If that river's name is shorter than nine letters it's another reason to get
mad at the teller of obvious facts...
|
|
Painting) Monet, Claude: Garden at Saint
Whoever scanned these picture most have been particularly fond of Claude
Monet (1840-1926), there are seven of his pictures here...
|
|
Painting) Monet, Claude: The Seine at Ar
Ar? The filename has Arg, and as far as I'm concerned it stands for Argh!
|
|
Painting) Monet, Claude: The Beach at Sa
This reminds me of a MUCK friend of mine. She's a dog - which of course makes
her a bitch.
|
|
Painting) Monet, Claude: Boulevard des C

Painting) Monet, Claude: Les bains de la
Another river; I guess bains means banks and the river's name is missing...
|
|
Painting) Monet, Claude: Japonnerie GIF:
Not a GIF here, of course, I converted it to a JPEG. Anyway, this must be
a popular dancer - just look at all those fans she's got!
|
|
Painting) Monet, Claude: Landscape: Parc

Painting) Lorrain, Claude: Seaport at su
Wild guess: At sunset? Guess the L in the file name stands for Lorrain.
More precisely, Claude Lorrain (1600-1682).

Sunny pic of mountain falls. Last revision
Nice picture. Looks like a photo to me, but then it says it has been
revised? So maybe it's a really detailed painting...
|
|
Painting) Pissarro, Camille: Entrance to
No doubt Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was going (entering) somewhere,
but where? Looks like another nice place, at least...
|
|
Painting) West, William: A Domestic Affl
Should be easy, there are only to words in my dictionary that start with
affl. So what do you think, is this an affliction or an affluence?
|
|
Painting) Winstanley, William: Meeting o
Just guessing again - meeting on the river bank? Or is it a meeting
of two (named) rivers?
